The Paisley Snail Case, Wellmeador, Paisley
This insignificant stone marks the spot at which The Wellmeadow Cafe once stood. On the 23rd August 1928 a Mrs Donoghue from Glasgow was sold a bottle of Ginger Beer in which she claimed she found a snail. She sued the manufacturer and although the case never went to trial, Lord Atkin gave the judgement in the House of Lords that set the precedent whereby "You must take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which you can reasonably foresee would be likely to injure your neighbour".
