Barlinnie Prison seen from Tollcross Park
Often referred to as Bar-L, Barlinnie was opened in 1880 to house 1000 inmates. Outwardly it hasn't changed much since then. It has been called the worst prison in Europe due to over crowding and poor conditions despite having several upgrades. 12 executions by hanging were carried out there between 1946 and 1960. For many years it housed the Libyan diplomat held responsible for the Lockerbie disaster.
