For 400 years this impressive ruin served as the "guardhouse of the bloodiest calley in Britain" Hermitage Castle's proximity to the English border made it a particular prize for both countries. The stone castle was built in 1240 by Sir Nicholas de Soules but there was a wooden castle here long before. There are still the remains of large earthworks all around the castle.
