A hard frost gives extra contrast to show the impressive box hedge designs at Chatelherault. The building dates from 1743 and was built as stables and kennels for the 5th duke of Hamilton who's Palace stood nearby. The Palace has since been demolished and this building was gutted by fire in 1940's. After being given to the nation it was restored by historic Scotland to its former glory between 1978-87 and today is open to the public with a small visitor centre at the rear.
